Simon Maxwell

As of March 2026, this website is no longer being updated. I now work mainly on climate issues, especially in Brighton and Hove, and new work can be found on the website of Climate:Change, our independent think-tank on socially inclusive action in the City: www.climatechangebh.org.uk.

Meanwhile, however, this website has over 850 entries, mostly representing my work on international development from 2010-2025. Among much else, there are over 50 book reviews, more than 20 papers and training cases on bridging research and policy and on managing think-tanks, and many papers on other topics, including aid, food security and nutrition, and the future of international development. See ‘Topics and Themes’ for more details. I can be reached at sm@simonmaxwell.net.

Ideas for Development European Development Days Video

As Andris Piebalgs, the European Commissioner for Development, prepares a new strategy for 2011, EDD 2010 are an opportunity to reflect on the modernization of the EU’s development policy.

What is the impact of these outcomes on development aid? Will integrating development into the EU’s global foreign policy conflict with the national policies of Member States in this field? What would be the best way of applying a coordination of effective aid among Member States? How can a consistent policy, adapted to the new EUEuropean Union institutions, be defined?

How will European development policy adapt to the diversity of developing countries?

See Simon's response to these questions here (you can read his report on the European Development Days conference (European Development Cooperation: priorities for 2011) here):
